In the hills of southern Rwanda, the small town of Kibeho has become one of Africa’s most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations. Its story goes back to November 28, 1981, when Alphonsine Mumureke, a student at Kibeho College, reported seeing the Virgin Mary. Over the following years, two other students, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka and Marie Claire Mukangango, also reported apparitions. The events continued until November 28, 1989 and eventually attracted the attention of Church authorities.
The Church carefully examined what was happening at Kibeho. Medical and theological commissions were established to study the reported apparitions and the lives and messages of the young visionaries. After the investigation, the Church recognized three of them as authentic seers: Alphonsine, Nathalie and Marie Claire. Their messages were considered consistent with Christian faith and teaching and were also seen as producing spiritual fruits among believers.

At the heart of the Kibeho message is Mary's identity as the “Mother of the Word.” According to the account preserved by the Assumption Sisters, Mary presented herself in this way during her conversations with the young visionaries. The title points toward the Christian belief in the Incarnation the coming of Jesus Christ into the world and emphasizes Mary's role in bringing Christ to humanity.
But Kibeho's message is not simply about remembering an extraordinary event from the past. It is also a call to examine one's life. The message repeatedly emphasizes conversion, prayer and a sincere return to God. Mary encouraged people to pray the Rosary and to rediscover the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows. For Father François Harerimana, rector of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kibeho, the message can be understood as an invitation to receive the “Word of life” through a genuine change of heart and sincere prayer.
One of the most remembered moments occurred on August 15, 1982, when the visionaries reported seeing Mary crying. The account has also become closely associated with warnings about suffering and the need for conversion. Looking back at Rwanda's history, the Kibeho message has therefore taken on a particularly profound meaning for many pilgrims, especially because the country experienced the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi twelve years after that reported vision.
The Catholic Church officially recognized the Kibeho apparitions on June 29, 2001. The recognition made Kibeho the first Marian apparition site in Africa to receive official recognition from the Catholic Church. More than four decades after the first reported apparition, the shrine continues to welcome people who come not only to learn about its history, but also to pray, seek peace, remember loved ones and reflect on the meaning of faith in their own lives.
Today, Kibeho's story continues to reach beyond Rwanda. For many visitors, the journey is not simply a trip to a historical site it is a personal pilgrimage. In the quiet hills of Nyaruguru, people arrive with different stories and different reasons for coming, but many leave carrying the same invitation at the heart of Kibeho: to pray, to seek reconciliation, to renew their faith and to live with hope.
