Thousands of pilgrims gather in Kibeho for prayer, reflection and the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Kibeho once again became a place of prayer and celebration on 15 August 2026, as more than 80,000 pilgrims gathered for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Pilgrims travelled from different parts of Rwanda and abroad to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, bringing with them their prayers, hopes and thanksgiving. For many visitors, the annual celebration is more than a religious event; it is an opportunity to reconnect with their faith and experience the unique spiritual atmosphere of Kibeho.
The large crowd showed just how much Kibeho continues to attract pilgrims from Rwanda and beyond. International visitors were also among those who travelled to the shrine, including pilgrims from Kenya who came to honour a family member and deepen their faith. Earlier in August, international Catholic media delegates visiting Rwanda for the SIGNIS World Congress also made a pilgrimage to Kibeho, further highlighting the shrine's growing international importance.

The celebrations also brought attention to the challenges that come with welcoming such a large number of visitors. With tens of thousands of people arriving in a single day, questions were raised about accommodation, sanitation, transportation and other services needed by pilgrims. The growing number of visitors presents both an opportunity and a responsibility for Kibeho to continue improving the experience and facilities available to those who come to the shrine.

Beyond the annual celebrations, Kibeho continues to hold a special place in the history of Catholicism in Africa. The apparitions reported by Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka and Marie Claire Mukangango were officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 2001. Today, Kibeho continues to welcome people seeking prayer, peace and spiritual renewal, while its story and importance continue to reach pilgrims far beyond Rwanda.
